Sitting Buddha

Sri Lanka

Origin: unknown
size: inches 3.1 (8 cm)
Provenance: Private aquisition, Kandy1981

This ivory statue was carved in a very archaic way. So it is difficult to attribute it to a special style. We acquired this piece near Kandy. The literature shows no similar statue.

Buddha sits in "dhyana mudra", the gesture of meditaion. This mudra is used in representations of the Shayamuni Buddha.
