Pendant

Burma

Origin: unknown
size: inches 1.2 (3 cm)
Provenance: Private aquisition, M andalay 1981

This pyramidal ivory Mon pendant shows Buddha

1. standing on an elephant holding a fan.

2. standing and praying in "dharmchakra mudra". This is the famous position of Buddha of the big statue of the Ananda-Temple in Pagan.

3. in the lotos-posture ("bhumisparsa mudra").

The typical oversized head of the sitting Buddha is characteristic for the Mon-style of the Burmese art. After the 15th century the artists carved the statue's fingers in equal length That indicates that this pendant derives from an earlier epoch.
