Shahyamuni Buddha

Pagan

Origin: unknown
size: inches 3.3 (8,5 cm)
Provenance: Private aquisition, Pagan 1981

This grey sandstone head with very short ear lobes shows the typical characteristics of the early 10th century Pagan-style. The hair is undecorated and the round ushniha is carved without a flame. The eyebrows are 'cross-wing' curved. The nose forms one continuous line with the forehead and the eyes are closed in meditation. The existence of the third eye shows that this head is - following the iconographical tradition - a sculpture of Shakyamuni Buddha, the enlightened Buddha.
